Maddy's world: excuses excuses

Drama queenI've been on the kids' backs about the way they've had a tendency to ignore me lately. I'll issue an instruction and they'll nod, and then continue what they're doing.

So it's pouring outside, but Maddy wanted to go out, and I told her she could if she wore her new coat. She was standing there while I zipped up the coat, and her attention strayed to the movie "Happy Feet" which was on the tv.

Me: Be careful not to get this dirty won't you?

Maddy: silence (engrossed in movie)

Me: Be careful...Maddy, you're not listening - pay attention. You didn't hear what I said did you?

Maddy: um, erm...

Me: I said 'be careful not to get your coat dirty'

Maddy: Yeah I know - I was going to say that but I was just using dramatic pause.

That's an 8 year old using 'dramatic pause'! That isn't even in my vocabulary - where does she get these from!

LOL - my now-14-y/o used to

LOL - my now-14-y/o used to come out with things like that. He's one of those kids you look at and think "He's definitely been here before..." *cue Twilight Zone music...

I've said the same of Maddy,

I've said the same of Maddy, in fact, she used to talk about when she lived with her 'other mummy', and told me a tale  about  when she had five big brothers who were mean to her, a friend called Jennica who 'lived on the mountain', and when her bus went into the cloud on the mountain and went down the hill and she had 'blood on her', everyone was crying except her.  Very eerie!  If I didn't believe in reincarnation before that, it certainly made me think!

Maddie sounds brilliant

Only 8? And she is so brilliant.

"Dramatic pause."

I'm still laughing.

You are blessed.

Yeah, she is - I never know

Yeah, she is - I never know what she's going to come out with next.  She's so entertaining to be around!

What a coincidence

I saw Happy Feet yesterday for the first time. I liked the movie. A lot.

Problem is, its not a children's movie. Way too much in depth for a children's movie. Maybe she understood that.

She probably did understand

She probably did understand it.  I found it hard to tell the penguins apart, and they became boring. I just thought it was a showcase for different styles of music/arts to fight it out, which didn't make sense when they were all penguins!

No No

No ... Happy feet is about breaking age old traditions in order to move forward.

So she might have taken it this way :

Age old tradition : listening to mom
Breaking it: ignoring mom.

And you have to have a dramatic pause to do all that.

:)

Hehe, it's disturbing that

Hehe, it's disturbing that she got the point of the movie and it went sailing over my head!  I suspect though, that she just thought the penguins were cute.  They were a step up anyway from 24 hours a day Hannah Montana and the Suite Life of Zac and Cody.

Problem Root

I think you should go to the root of the problem- what movie was she watching?

"Happy Feet" - all about

"Happy Feet" - all about dancing penguins - one of the most boring movies I've seen.  But slightly better than what she's been busting to watch all week - which was the "Inspector Gadget" movie.  That was painful.
